On May 27, some P2.4 MILLION worth of logs were discovered by members of a fact-finding mission inside an industrial forest plantation project in Mati, Davao Oriental. Company guards had prevented them the day before from entering the place in order to verify residents' allegations of massive illegal logging. Guided by armed tribal members who call themselves ''Alimaong" or holy warriors, the mission, led by the church-based Interfaith Movement for Peace, Empowerment and Development (Impede) found the logs scattered in the log deck and log landings of Asia Pulp and Paper Integrated Mills Inc. (Appimi) Appimi holds and Industrial Industrial Forest Plantation Management Agreement (Ifma), covering 3,888 hectares of land spread Sitios Magum, Kasinikan, Katmonan and Wagon of Mati's Barangay Macambol. The Alimaong pointed to other areas where logs, many of which Impede foresters Edgar Solis and Marito Labad say are undersized, have yet to be retrieved. Film footage taken by advocates of Witness, a program of New York-based Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, also show that hundreds of smaller residual trees had been cut or uprooted. The damage was done during the felling and bucking operations, the foresters said.
